Quick Answer
Scotland trip cost, in short: expect about £70 to £90 per person per day on a tight budget (hostels, trains, pub meals), and about £125 to £200 per person per day for a mid-range trip with a hire car and hotels, based on two people sharing. Flights are extra. Accommodation is the biggest and most variable cost, and it roughly doubles in July and August, especially in Edinburgh and on Skye.
Our verdict: Scotland is expensive in peak summer and good value in May, June and September. The single best saving is travelling outside July and August.

Before You Go: Fixed Costs
- UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): £20 per person. Most visa-exempt visitors, including travellers from the US, Canada, Australia and the EU, need one. The fee rose from £16 to £20 on 8 April 2026. An ETA is valid for two years.
- Flights: Edinburgh and Glasgow are the main international airports. Prices depend on where you fly from and when, so we do not include them in the budgets above.
Accommodation: The Biggest Cost
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the most expensive place to sleep in Scotland. Hostel dorm beds run from about £15 to £40 a night, with the lowest prices in winter and the highest during the August festivals. One hostel price tracker shows average dorm prices more than doubling from February to August.

Since 24 July 2026, Edinburgh adds a 5% visitor levy to accommodation for the first five nights of a stay. A £150 room becomes £157.50 a night. Glasgow plans its own 5% levy from 25 January 2027.
The Highlands and Skye

Hotels on the Isle of Skye averaged about £195 a night in October 2026, and booking data shows July as Skye’s most expensive month by a wide margin. Inverness and Fort William are usually cheaper than Skye and Edinburgh, with more choice. Book Skye first: it has the fewest rooms on most routes.
Getting Around
Hire Car and Fuel
A small hire car in Edinburgh averaged about £35 to £60 a day on comparison sites in October 2026. Fuel is unusually expensive right now: the UK average was 174.6p a litre for petrol and 199.3p for diesel in the week of 19 October 2026. A 1,000-mile road trip at 45 UK mpg costs about £176 in petrol or £201 in diesel.
Insurance is where hire costs grow. Our renting a car in Scotland guide explains the excess, the deposit and how to avoid paying £20 to £35 a day at the rental desk.
Trains and Buses

- Airport bus: the Airlink 100 from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre costs £6 single. The tram costs £7.90.
- Short trips: Edinburgh to Stirling takes under an hour, with off-peak returns from £12.60.
- Rail passes: the Spirit of Scotland Travelpass costs £155 for any 4 days of travel in 8, or £196 for 8 days in 15. With a railcard, the 4-day pass drops to about £103. Ferries are no longer included and are paid separately.
For a full car-free route, see our Scotland by Train guide.
Parking
Most car parks at the big sights now charge: £5 at Glenfinnan and £6 for up to six hours at the Old Man of Storr on Skye. Budget £30 or so for a 10-day road trip.
Food and Drink

| Item | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Cafe breakfast | £8 to £12 |
| Pub or cafe lunch | £10 to £18 |
| Pub main course | £14 to £20 |
| Coffee | £3 to £4 |
| Pint of beer | £5 to £6 (about £6 on average in Edinburgh) |
Prices in Edinburgh’s Old Town and on Skye are at the top of these ranges. Supermarket lunches and a picnic on driving days are the easiest way to cut the food budget.
Sights and Attractions

| Attraction | Adult price |
|---|---|
| Edinburgh Castle | £23.50 online, £26 at the gate |
| Palace of Holyroodhouse | £22 in advance, £26 on the day |
| Stirling Castle | £18.50 online |
| Urquhart Castle (Loch Ness) | £14 online |
| Highlands day tour from Edinburgh | about £55 to £65 |
The Explorer Pass: Historic Scotland’s 14-day Explorer Pass costs £48 for an adult and covers Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle and Urquhart Castle, among dozens of other sites. Those three castles alone cost £56 with online tickets, so the pass pays for itself on a classic route. It does not cover Holyroodhouse or National Trust for Scotland sites.
Many of Scotland’s best sights are free: the national museums in Edinburgh, Arthur’s Seat, Calton Hill, and almost every Highland walk and viewpoint.
What a 10-Day Trip Costs: A Worked Example
This is the budget for our 10-day Scotland itinerary, for two people sharing a car and rooms.
| Item | Cost for two |
|---|---|
| Accommodation, 9 nights | £1,350 to £2,250 |
| Hire car, 8 days | £280 to £480 |
| Fuel, about 700 miles | about £123 to £141 |
| Castles (or two Explorer Passes, £96) | about £112 |
| Parking | about £30 |
| Food | £600 to £1,000 |
| Total | about £2,500 to £4,000 |
For a shorter trip, our 3 to 4 days in Scotland plan costs about £140 per person in sights and transport, before accommodation and food.
How to Spend Less in Scotland
- Travel in May, June or September. Same long days, far lower accommodation prices than July and August.
- Book Skye and Edinburgh first. These sell out and get more expensive the later you book.
- Buy the Explorer Pass if you plan to visit three or more Historic Scotland castles.
- Book castles online. Edinburgh Castle is £2.50 cheaper online, and Stirling Castle gives 25% off if you arrive by train or bus and use the code GOOD25.
- Pay in pounds. When a card machine offers to charge you in your home currency, choose pounds instead.
- Use a UK eSIM rather than your home network’s roaming package.
The Honest Part
- Peak summer roughly doubles the cost of a bed. In Edinburgh in August and on Skye in July, prices are far above the averages in this guide. If those months are your only option, book many months ahead.
- Fuel is at record highs in October 2026. Diesel passed £2 a litre for the first time in early October. If you are comparing hire cars, a petrol model may cost less to run.
- The cheapest hire car price is rarely the real price. Excess cover, a large deposit, young driver fees and one-way fees can add more than the daily rate.
- Small costs add up. The ETA, the Edinburgh levy, parking at every famous viewpoint and the optional Loch Ness cruise are each small, but together they can add £100 or more per person.
